K18 or Olaplex?
It’s one of those haircare questions that refuses to go away—and we understand why.
At Blendbox, we carry both K18 and Olaplex, so we’re not particularly interested in convincing you that one brand wins. We’re much more interested in helping you figure out which one makes sense for your hair.
Both have earned their place in professional haircare. Both are favourites for hair that’s been highlighted, bleached, coloured or put through a little too much heat. And both are often recommended to the same customer.
But they aren’t interchangeable.
The technology is different, the routines are different, and depending on what you’ve done to your hair, we may recommend one over the other—or neither.
So if you were shopping at Blendbox and asked us which one to put in your cart, here’s how that conversation would go.
Let’s Start With K18
If your hair has been through it—bleach, highlights, repeated colour services or a serious relationship with your flat iron—K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask is one of the treatments we reach for most often.
K18 uses its patented K18PEPTIDE™ technology, designed to reconnect polypeptide chains in damaged hair.
In less science-y terms, it’s designed to work on damage within the hair rather than simply making the outside feel softer.
And the routine is surprisingly simple.
Shampoo your hair. Don’t condition. Towel dry, apply a small amount of K18 and leave it alone for four minutes.
That four-minute part matters.
Don’t immediately add oil, leave-in conditioner or styling cream over it. Give K18 its four minutes first, then carry on with the rest of your routine.
And please don’t use half the bottle.
K18 is concentrated. Start with a small amount and add more only if your hair actually needs it. More product doesn’t mean more repair.
K18 recommends using the mask for 4–6 consecutive washes when you first start, then switching to maintenance use as needed.
For freshly highlighted or seriously compromised hair, this would usually be our first pick.

Olaplex Is a Different Kind of Routine
The Olaplex product most often compared with K18 is Nº.3 Hair Perfector™, but there’s something worth clearing up:
Olaplex Nº.3 isn’t a conditioner or traditional hair mask either.
It’s a pre-shampoo treatment.
You apply it before shampooing, let it process, rinse, then follow with shampoo and conditioner.
That’s quite different from K18, which comes after shampoo and stays in your hair.
And this is one reason we don’t love simply asking which one is “better.” They aren’t even asking you to build the same routine.
Where Olaplex really shines is if you like the idea of making bond care part of your entire wash day.
You can use Nº.3 Hair Perfector as your treatment, followed by Nº.4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo and Nº.5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner.
Do you need all three?
No.
But if you like having your shampoo, conditioner and treatment working as a system, Olaplex makes that very easy.

If You Bleach or Highlight Your Hair, We’d Lean K18
This is probably the easiest call for us.
If your hair is heavily highlighted, bleached or noticeably compromised after chemical services, we’d put our money into the K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask first.
Not because Olaplex isn’t good. It is.
We just really like K18 for the person who leaves a major colour appointment thinking, “Okay, my hair needs help.”
It’s concentrated, the routine is straightforward, and you don’t have to replace everything else in your shower to start using it.
Shampoo. K18. Four minutes. Done.
If You Want Repair Built Into Wash Day, Olaplex Makes a Lot of Sense
Some people prefer a more traditional wash routine. They want to shampoo, condition and occasionally add a treatment without changing the way they already wash their hair.
That’s where we’d give Olaplex the edge.
Nº.4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo and Nº.5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner are easy to work into a regular wash day, and you can bring in Nº.3 when your hair needs the additional treatment.
It’s also a great option if you already use Olaplex and your hair loves it.
You don’t need to switch to K18 simply because another product is getting more attention online.
If your routine is working, we’re big believers in leaving a good thing alone.
Can You Use K18 and Olaplex Together?
Yes.
Whether you need to is another question.
This is where haircare routines can get a little ridiculous.
K18, Olaplex Nº.3, bond shampoo, bond conditioner, repair mask, protein treatment, leave-in, oil…
Suddenly your shower looks like a salon backbar and you have absolutely no idea which product is actually helping.
If you’re trying K18 for the first time, we’d keep things simple.
Use it properly for the initial 4–6 washes and see how your hair responds. Then decide what else actually deserves a place in your routine.
If you already love an Olaplex shampoo, conditioner or styling product, there’s no reason to ceremoniously throw it away because you bought K18.
Good haircare doesn’t require brand monogamy.
What About Heat Damage?
If your blow dryer, flat iron or curling iron gets a serious workout every week, repairing existing damage is only half the conversation.
You also need to stop creating quite so much new damage.
For a K18 routine, we like pairing the mask with K18 Molecular Repair Hair Oil. Just remember the order: let the mask sit for its four minutes first, then go in with your styling and finishing products.
Regardless of which repair system you choose, heat protection should be part of the routine.
Buying expensive repair products while repeatedly putting unprotected high heat on your hair is a pretty expensive way to run in circles.
Fine Hair? Don’t Be Scared of Repair—Just Don’t Drown It
Fine hair can absolutely be damaged.
The trick is not assuming damaged hair needs enormous amounts of product.
With K18 especially, start small. If your hair feels heavy after using it, don’t immediately decide the product doesn’t work for you. First look at how much you used.
The same thinking applies to Olaplex.
You don’t need to layer every repair product in the range simply because your hair is fragile.
Fine hair needs repair without losing movement.
And If Your Hair Is Just Dry?
This one matters.
Dry hair and damaged hair aren’t necessarily the same thing.
If your hair is naturally coarse, curly or thirsty but hasn’t been heavily bleached, chemically processed or heat damaged, we may recommend a really good moisture routine before either K18 or Olaplex.
That might mean investing in a better hydrating shampoo and conditioner or adding a moisture mask.
This is also why we don’t think everyone shopping for hair repair at Blendbox necessarily needs the same thing.
If your hair is genuinely damaged, repair technology makes sense.
If it’s simply thirsty, we’d rather point you toward a great moisture routine than sell you a repair treatment you don’t need.
Buy for the hair you actually have.
So… K18 or Olaplex?
If you asked us at Blendbox, we’d start with one question:
What has your hair been through?
“I bleach or highlight my hair and it’s feeling pretty rough.”
We’d start with K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask.
“I want bond care built into my regular shampoo and conditioner.”
Take a look at Olaplex Nº.4 + Nº.5.
“My hair is damaged, but I want the simplest possible routine.”
K18.
“I’ve been using Olaplex for years and my hair loves it.”
Keep using it.
“Can I use both?”
Absolutely. Just don’t turn one wash day into a chemistry experiment.
“My hair isn’t really damaged. It’s just very dry.”
We’d probably recommend something else entirely.
And that’s really the answer.
There isn’t a universal winner because K18 and Olaplex aren’t trying to give you exactly the same routine.
For serious bleach, highlight and chemical damage, we tend to lean K18. For someone who wants bond care woven through a more traditional wash routine, Olaplex remains an excellent choice.
