Scalp care has gotten a little out of hand.
There are scalp scrubs, serums, oils, masks, exfoliators, brushes, pre-shampoo treatments and overnight treatments. Scroll through beauty content long enough and you could easily come away thinking your scalp needs an entirely separate skincare routine.
It probably doesn’t.
A good scalp routine is actually pretty simple: clean your scalp properly, pay attention to what it’s telling you and add a targeted treatment if there’s something you actually want to address.
Here’s where we’d start.
First, what’s actually going on up there?
Before buying anything, figure out what you’re trying to accomplish.
Roots oily again a day after washing? That’s different from a scalp that feels tight and dry.
Living on dry shampoo, texture spray and styling products? Buildup may be the issue.
Scalp feels perfectly fine, but you’re interested in supporting fuller, healthier-looking hair? That’s another category entirely.
And flakes don’t automatically mean “dry scalp.” Persistent flaking, itching, redness or irritation can have causes that aren’t going to be solved by adding another cosmetic scalp oil. That’s when we’d skip the experimenting and speak to a dermatologist.
For everyone else, your routine can stay refreshingly uncomplicated.
Start with a really good wash
This sounds almost too basic, but before adding a scalp treatment, make sure you’re actually cleansing your scalp well.
Shampoo belongs primarily at your roots and scalp. Massage it in gently with your fingertips, give yourself enough time to actually work through the scalp, and rinse thoroughly.
Your lengths don’t need the same scrubbing. The shampoo running through them as you rinse generally does plenty, especially if your hair is dry, colour-treated or damaged.
And about that idea that washing your hair less is always healthier?
We don’t buy it.
If you have fine hair and an oily scalp, washing more frequently may be exactly what your hair needs. Someone with thick, curly or naturally dry hair may be perfectly comfortable going considerably longer.
For a scalp-focused wash day, we like Innersense Clarity Hairbath + Clarity Conditioner. The pair is a particularly nice option when you want an uncomplicated cleanse and condition without loading your routine with a bunch of extras. The Clarity Conditioner is fragrance-free and designed with sensitive scalps in mind, while still leaving the hair soft and conditioned
Wash your hair when your scalp needs washing. There isn’t a prize for making it to day seven.
Dry shampoo lovers, this one’s for you
We love a good dry shampoo. K18 AirWash™ Dry Shampoo is one of our favourites when you want to stretch a blowout, refresh your roots or get another day out of your style without that heavy, powdery feeling some dry shampoos leave behind.
But four days of dry shampoo, texture spray, hairspray and styling products eventually have to go somewhere.
If your hair feels freshly washed but your roots somehow still feel coated—or your usual shampoo just doesn’t seem to be getting everything out—it’s probably time for a reset.
This is where we’d reach for something like VERB Ghost Exfoliating Scalp Nectar.
It’s designed as an exfoliating scalp treatment, so we wouldn’t treat it like another daily step. Think of it as the product you bring in when your scalp needs a more thorough refresh.
And once you’ve removed the buildup? Go back to your regular routine.
You don’t need to exfoliate your scalp simply because scalp exfoliation exists.
If your scalp feels dry, don’t attack it
This is one of the easiest scalp-care mistakes to make.
Your scalp feels uncomfortable, so you clarify it. Then you exfoliate it. Then you scrub it.
And somehow it feels even worse.
If dryness or tightness is the issue, take a look at what you’re already doing before adding another cleansing product. Frequent clarifying, very hot water and overly aggressive scalp treatments aren’t necessarily what a dry-feeling scalp is asking for.
This is where Innersense Hair Renew Pre Wash Treatment makes a lot more sense. It’s specifically designed as a pre-shampoo scalp treatment, giving you a dedicated scalp-care step before you wash rather than adding another product after the fact.
Apply it directly to the scalp before shampooing, let it do its thing according to the directions, and then follow with your regular wash routine.
Want fuller-looking hair? Now we’re talking serums.
If your scalp is clean and comfortable but your goal is fuller, denser, healthier-looking hair, that’s when we’d look beyond cleansing and into dedicated scalp treatments.
There are a couple of interesting options depending on how far you want to take the routine.
K18 FutureIQ
K18 is best known for molecular repair, but FutureIQ Biomimetic Hair Longevity Serum takes the brand into scalp and hair-longevity care.
It’s a lightweight nightly scalp treatment designed to support a healthier scalp environment and improve the appearance of hair density while helping reduce hair fall.
This is the one we’d look at if you’re serious about making scalp care a consistent part of your hair routine, rather than doing the occasional scalp detox.
It’s also worth making the distinction here: FutureIQ isn’t a clarifying treatment.
If your problem is three days’ worth of dry shampoo sitting at your roots, clean your scalp. If you’re looking for an ongoing hair-longevity treatment, then we’re talking FutureIQ.
If fuller, thicker-looking hair is the goal but you don’t necessarily want to jump straight into K18, éprouvage Reviving Scalp Serum is another option we like.
It’s a daily scalp treatment formulated to support the scalp environment and the appearance of fuller, thicker hair.
Same category of concern, different approach and price point.
That’s why we’d rather help you shop according to your goal than tell you there’s one universally “best” scalp serum.
Your scalp and your ends can want completely different things
This gets overlooked all the time.
You can absolutely have oily roots and dry ends.
Or a comfortable scalp and severely damaged lengths.
Your shampoo, conditioner and treatments don’t all have to solve the same problem.
If your scalp gets oily quickly, cleanse accordingly. Then put your richer conditioner or mask where it’s actually needed—usually through the mid-lengths and ends.
Fine hair may want lightweight conditioning. Bleached hair may need considerably more repair and moisture. Curly hair will have its own needs.
Treat the hair that’s actually in front of you rather than forcing every product to match one “hair type.”
And no, dry shampoo doesn’t count as washing your hair
We wish it did.
Dry shampoo is brilliant for absorbing oil, refreshing roots and getting another day out of a blowout.
What it doesn’t do is wash your scalp.
If you’re repeatedly layering it over oil, sweat and yesterday’s styling products, eventually the answer isn’t another spray.
It’s shampoo.
Sometimes the least exciting product in your scalp routine is the one you needed all along.
So… do you need a scalp exfoliator AND a serum?
Maybe. But probably not because someone on TikTok told you to use both.
They do different jobs.
An exfoliating treatment makes sense when buildup is the issue. A scalp serum is a leave-in treatment designed around a specific concern, which could include hydration, scalp condition or the appearance of density depending on the formula.
If you genuinely benefit from both, they don’t need to become one enormous routine.
Use your exfoliating treatment when your scalp needs a reset. Use your serum according to its directions.
Done.
A quick word about dandruff
Not every scalp issue belongs in the beauty aisle.
If you’re dealing with persistent flakes, significant itching, redness, inflammation or irritation, we’d be careful about diagnosing it yourself as “dry scalp” and covering it in oil.
Dandruff and other scalp conditions can require specific treatments, including medicated shampoos. If the problem persists, a dermatologist is a much better resource than continually cycling through cosmetic products.
We sell professional haircare. We also know when professional haircare isn’t the answer.
So, what does your scalp actually need?
Probably less than social media would have you believe.
If your scalp feels good and your hair is behaving, don’t invent a problem. Cleanse properly and carry on.
If your roots constantly feel coated, start by dealing with buildup. Something like VERB Ghost Exfoliating Scalp Nectar may earn a place on your wash day.
And if your scalp is comfortable but fuller-looking hair and density are the goal, that’s when we’d start looking at a dedicated treatment like éprouvage Reviving Scalp Serum or K18 FutureIQ.
The goal isn’t to build the longest scalp routine possible.
It’s to figure out what your scalp is asking for—and choose one good product that answers it.
Your scalp is skin. Treat it well. Just don’t turn it into a 10-step project.
